The GERWC Annual Awards Banquet was held on February 9, 2002. Our guest speaker was Jonathan Matthews, a national racewalker with many accomplishments and records. In the eight years between 1992 and 2000, he won 3 National Championships and set 4 American Records (the fastest-ever among all U.S. citizens) and 20 Masters American Records (the fastest-ever among all U.S. citizens over age 40). In 1996 and 1999, Jonathan received USA Track & Field's Master Racewalker of the Year award.
The awards banquet is held at the Southwest Indiana Regional Council on Aging (SWIRCA). Several awards are given each year, including top high school runners as well as Male and Female Runner awards for runners and racewalkers. Each year the GERWC Board of Directors chooses the recipient for the Ray Rayl Award. Named after its first recipient, the award is given to an individual whose actions in support of running/racewalking and club activities has been exceptional over a period of time. The Ray Rayl Award has a permanent home at the YMCA-Evansville.
