Cedric Hustace, Don Nichols, Jerry Seddon, Jerry Walker, Bob Head, Mike
Higney, Bob Christmas, Bob Lauderdale, Ray Pritchet, Jim Effinger, Joe
Whelan.
SCHOLARSHIPS: The first order of
business was the awarding of scholarships. Joe Whelan presented the scholarship
checks of $500.00 each to former Mater Dei runner Katy Mckinney and former
Bosse runner Nathan Klassey. Katy will be attending Purdue and Nathan
USI. Both students intend to run track at their respective colleges
as walk-ons. Both had great credentials and will do a great job representing
the Evansville area at their respective schools. The selection committee
was composed of Tom Anderson, Ray Pritchet and Joe Whelan. The families
of both runners were present for the scholarship awards and thanked the
club for the consideration and the awards.
TREASURER’S REPORT: The treasurer’s
report was reviewed and approved.
RACE TIMING: Mike Higney gave the
race timing report. He reported that 337 runners were officially counted
at Jasper this weekend and Joe Whelan stated that he would bill Jasper
for 337 runners plus expenses. There is a run this coming Saturday
in Petersburg. The card system will be used, as there is usually
a small turnout. Jim Effinger, Ray Pritchet and Richard Tenbarge will go
to Petersburg to do the timing. Mike reported that he downloaded an update
to our computerized timing system and it is time for renewal which will
cost about $25.00. He will take care of this.
NEWSLETTER: Jerry Seddon stated
that the upcoming newsletter will be put together by Jerry Walker.
Jerry Seddon will be on another great adventure. Jerry Walker has
put the newsletter together in the past. Any information for the
August/September newsletter should be forwarded to gerwcnews@yahoo.com
in the next week.
WALKERS REPORT: Bob Head gave the
Walker’ Report. He stated that the local club has been trying to put together
a race walk at Wesselman’s Park with the Indianapolis Club but has not
been getting any response. Cedric Hustace suggested that he try to
contact the St. Louis Club of which Cedric is a member. This will
be done.
PICNIC: Don Nichols advised
that everything for the picnic this coming Sunday at Wesselman’s Park is
on Schedule. We will have a much larger crowd than last year. There will
be a horseshoe tournament with the winners each given a $25.00 VISA card.
There will also be badminton and games for the kids.
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: There was much
discussion about the Scholarship program. Discussion was held on
limiting the scholarships to adjoining counties including Vanderburgh.
Discussion was also held on increasing the amount. Further discussion
will be held before the next program is announced.
SUMMER TRACK PROGRAM: Richard Tenbarge
commented on the Summer Track Program. It was considered a great success
with participants from all age groups, 3 to 82+. Hopefully we can
conduct another program next year. Gordon Benfield did a great job
putting the event together.
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: Discussion was
held on the upcoming membership drive. A letter to present members plus
the club’s mailing list will be sent out in October with return envelopes
included. Membership cards may be sent to be members. We will
have to look at the cost.
GIFTS: Bob Lauderdale presented a
check for $500.00 to the club’s scholarship fund. An old Evansville College
friend gave the check to him. Gifts are always welcome and this is
the second year in a row that club received a check from this benefactor.
CROSS-COUNTRY: It’s cross-country
time with a request from Chad Hartmann for help in timing the middle school
cross country meet. Bob Lauderdale is taking care and getting volunteers
for these events. Ray Pritchet will coordinate the high school cross-country
events.
